The period of pregnancy in mammals, from conception to birth. Gestation length varies significantly by species, for example, roughly sixteen weeks in pigs and around nine months in cows. Terms like "gestation stall" or "gestation crate" refer to a confinement structure used during this pregnancy period.
CAFO
A metal-barred crate used to confine a female breeding pig around the time she gives birth and while she suckles her piglets, typically for up to six weeks per cycle. Read more.
Gestation
A Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. A legal, regulatory term used in the United States (defined by the Environmental Protection Agency) to classify a livestock facility above a certain size or animal density. Australia has no direct legal equivalent, the closest regulatory concept is an "intensive livestock" or "intensive animal industry" classification, which varies by state. CAFO is widely used internationally as shorthand for large-scale, intensive animal agriculture generally, even outside its original US legal context.
